Terms
Terms of use.
Effective 17 October 2026. These terms are the agreement between you and Caleb Dorris for use of Assay.
The service
Assay is a personal bookkeeping tool. It shows cash you mark as included, minus bills due through your next payday, minus amounts you have set aside in vaults. You can enter that information yourself or connect a bank through Plaid. Assay is not a bank, a lender, a tax preparer, or an investment adviser. The number on the home screen is a calculation from the data in your books. It is not a promise of what the bank will pay or what you should do with the money.
Who may use it
You must be at least 18 and able to form a contract. You use your own email address and your own password. One person per account. You do not share the password, and you do not connect a bank account you are not allowed to connect.
The account
Opening an account requires the consent box on the registration form. That box starts unchecked. The operator may suspend an account that breaks these terms. A suspended account cannot sign in. You may close the account by emailing caleb@calebdorris.com. Closing it follows the deletion steps in the privacy policy.
Banks
Bank login happens inside Plaid Link. Assay never asks for, and does not store, your bank username or password. You choose which accounts to include. You can remove a connected bank in Assay, which deletes that bank’s accounts and transactions from Assay. Revoking Plaid’s access at the bank, or asking the operator to revoke it, is described in the privacy policy.
Banks, Plaid, and the network between them fail sometimes. A balance or a transaction can be missing, delayed, or later corrected by the bank. Assay shows the last copy it has. You are responsible for checking the bank before you rely on the number for a payment.
Price
The Founding plan is $0. The monthly plan is not charged to a card. If a paid plan is offered later, the price and the date it starts will be shown before you are asked to pay, and these terms will be updated.
Live balance checks and on-demand transaction refreshes, when they are offered, are paid from prepaid credit. You choose the amount. The card is charged enough to cover the processor’s fee, and the credit that remains is what you can spend on those checks. Credit does not expire. It is not refunded to the card, because the processor keeps its fee on a refund. Unused credit stays on the account. Ordinary sync of transactions is included and does not spend the credit. Assay does not store the card number. Stripe does.
Acceptable use
You will not use Assay to break the law, to probe or disrupt the service, to access another person’s books, or to submit another person’s financial data without their permission. You will not attempt to extract the Plaid credentials or another account’s data.
The operator’s side
Assay is provided as it runs today. Features can change or pause, including bank connections, while the product is still being built. The operator will not invent charges. If the service stops, you can ask for a copy of the account data before it is deleted. Deletion still follows the privacy policy.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, Assay and the operator are not liable for lost profits, missed payments, or decisions you make from the spendable-cash figure, or for a bank or Plaid outage. If liability is found anyway, it is limited to the greater of the amount you paid Assay in the previous twelve months or fifty dollars. This limit does not apply where the law does not allow a limit, including liability for fraud.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee and the United States. Disputes are handled in the state or federal courts located in Tennessee.
Changes
The date at the top changes when these terms change. Using Assay after that date means you accept the new terms.
